Beyond the Day: The New sTARTUp Day
For the past decade, sTARTUp Day has created a place in Tartu where new ideas, relationships and collaborations can begin. Following its tenth edition, the organisation is now entering a new chapter. The NGO is expanding that role beyond the annual festival, building a year-round platform through sTARTUp Day, Digit and a growing portfolio of programs and collaborations.
The idea behind the shift is simple: promising ideas are more likely to create impact when the right people, knowledge and resources come together early enough. At an ecosystem level, this means helping knowledge, talent, capital and opportunities connect more effectively across organisations, sectors, cities and borders.
Researchers may need business partners, customer feedback or access to investors. Companies may be looking for new technologies or scientific expertise. Early-stage investors benefit from discovering promising teams, technologies and ideas sooner. sTARTUp Day sees its role in creating the conditions for these connections to happen more often, across sectors and throughout the year.
We see value beyond companies that traditionally define themselves as deep tech. Scientific expertise and knowledge can strengthen existing businesses, help solve industry challenges and create entirely new opportunities, opening the door to a much broader group of researchers, founders and companies. For us, science-empowered entrepreneurship is ultimately about bringing research and the market closer together. Scientific knowledge can create new opportunities for businesses, while challenges coming from companies and society can give researchers new problems to solve and new ways for their work to create impact.
From events to year-round connections
Events will remain at the heart of sTARTUp Day. The festival is still the organisation’s largest gathering place and an important part of its identity.
Existing initiatives such as Digit already create opportunities for more focused communities to connect beyond the flagship festival. As sTARTUp Day develops into a year-round platform, these different touchpoints can become part of a more connected journey rather than a calendar of separate events. Smaller formats throughout the year allow focused communities to meet around specific challenges, build relationships and develop ideas further. The festival then becomes the culmination of that journey - a place where conversations, collaborations and opportunities built throughout the year come together on a larger stage, and where the progress of the community can be celebrated.
Some activities may be led by sTARTUp Day itself, while others are developed together with universities, ecosystem players, investors, science parks and other partners. The aim is to create a connected program where every format serves a clear purpose and helps relationships develop over time.
Some of that work is already underway, while other initiatives are still being developed. Project Mind Gym supports founders in building the resilience, energy and sustainable working practices needed for the long term. Next100 is being developed to help the next generation of entrepreneurial talent gain earlier access to relevant knowledge, networks and opportunities.
Making meetings more meaningful
Some of the most valuable outcomes start with encounters nobody could have fully planned in advance. The role of sTARTUp Day is not to engineer every connection, but to create the conditions where both intentional matchmaking and productive serendipity can happen.
That means bringing people outside their usual circles - across industries, institutions, disciplines and borders - while still giving them enough context to recognise who might be relevant to them.
sTARTUp Day already combines open networking with structured matchmaking. The next step is to make this more targeted through richer participant profiles, more curated introductions and smaller thematic formats alongside the open festival experience. The same approach can work throughout the year, creating space for deeper conversations around particular topics, sectors and challenges.
The aim is to make the ecosystem easier to navigate and relevant connections easier to find.
A stronger ecosystem through collaboration
From an international perspective, Estonia is already a small ecosystem, and its strength comes from how well its different parts work together. sTARTUp Day wants to contribute by creating trusted, cross-organisational spaces for collaboration, connecting complementary initiatives and helping successful formats reach beyond organisational or regional boundaries.
A stronger national ecosystem ultimately creates more opportunities for Tartu as well: more capital, more talent, more companies, more international relationships and more reasons for people to come here. It’s a win-win!
That mindset also shaped a recent practical decision. When the dates initially planned for sTARTUp Day overlapped with the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2027 in Tallinn, the organisation chose to move the festival rather than compete for participants, partners, accommodation and production capacity. The decision reflects a broader principle: strengthening the ecosystem sometimes means adapting our own plans to support a larger shared opportunity for Estonia and the region.
Looking towards the Baltics and Nordics
Venture capital is increasingly international by nature, with investors looking beyond their home markets for promising teams and opportunities. For companies and research partners, wider networks can similarly open access to expertise, technologies and new collaborations. A more connected Baltic and Nordic ecosystem can bring these opportunities closer together and make the region stronger as a whole.
For sTARTUp Day, international reach is not about expanding for its own sake. It is about helping build stronger bridges: bringing relevant knowledge, capital and opportunities into the region while opening doors for local founders, researchers and organisations abroad.
This can take the form of delegations, joint programs, partner events and other collaborations that connect communities across borders and build deeper relationships over time.
In short and simple words...
Building on what already works
For participants, that means better matchmaking, stronger science and technology content and more opportunities to meet relevant partners. For the wider ecosystem, it means an organisation that remains active throughout the year and helps connections develop across sectors, organisations and borders.
The ambition is to help build an ecosystem where good ideas move faster, useful knowledge travels further, and the right people have more chances to find each other.
Tartu remains the home of sTARTUp Day, and the festival remains its largest gathering point. Around it, the organisation is building a year-round network of programs, collaborations and curated encounters across Estonia and the wider Baltic and Nordic region.
The stronger those connections become, the stronger every part of the ecosystem becomes with them.

A broader view of science-based entrepreneurship
Many promising ideas and technologies begin in research, but research alone does not create impact. It needs pathways into companies, markets, real-world applications and stronger connections between the people who create knowledge and those who can help turn it into something useful. This is where science-empowered entrepreneurship comes in. We use the term to describe businesses and entrepreneurial initiatives that turn research, specialised knowledge or evidence-based innovation into products, services and solutions with real-world impact. We see value beyond companies that traditionally define themselves as deep tech. Making meetings more meaningful
Large festivals draw their strength from diversity. Thousands of people can meet, exchange ideas and discover opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach.

A stronger ecosystem through collaboration
Although sTARTUp Day is rooted in Tartu, its ambition has always depended on connections beyond one city. Strengthening entrepreneurship in Tartu also means strengthening the wider Estonian ecosystem and creating more pathways between regions, research, companies and communities.

The year-round platform will combine several layers:
- the sTARTUp Day festival as the main gathering point,
- Digit as a focused software and technology conference,
- programs such as Project Mind Gym and Next100,
- smaller thematic encounters, and
- international collaborations.
Building on what already works
The next chapter builds directly on the network, community and experience created during sTARTUp Day’s first decade.

For the wider ecosystem, it means an organisation that remains active throughout the year and helps connections develop across sectors, organisations and borders.
